Suspenseful Short Story Draft (no title chosen yet)

I felt the suspense in the air, but I wouldn’t dare speak of it. Something wasn’t right, I knew in my gut something bad was to happen, although it’s most likely my usual paranoia. I feel like I’m being watched, or someone, something is after me, but it’s most likely my silly little thoughts. I get mysterious text messages, but I simply blow it off as a harmless prank. I give myself excuses to all the happenings, trying to convince myself everything is alright.

Though, part of my brain is yelling out to me, warning me of possible danger, but I didn't listen. I was wrong to not listen, because it got horribly worse. Something happened that I never thought would actually happen to me personally. I didn't think that kind of evil existed. I had come home from my temporary job at a coffee shop, but no one was around when I stepped inside.

“Hello?”

My squeaky voice echoed throughout the empty house, yet with no answer.

Walking further into my home, I then noticed my dog, curled up under the table. Shaking with something close to fear. She sensed me and immediately jumped up and started whining and whimpering, while pacing around. I tried to calm her down, but she seemed very worked up over something.

It made me even more suspicious.

A piece of paper then caught my eye on top of the counter. I hesitantly walked over to it and picked up the sheet. I read it carefully.

"To Nara,
Me and your father have gone on an unexpected trip for the weekend. We trust that you won't do anything illegal and you'll do your chores and feed the dog. Be safe, and don't bother calling us. Our service won't work where we are going.
Love, mom and dad."

The note seemed casually written, but there was something off about it. My parents had no intentions of going on a 'unexpected trip'. Better yet, they rarely leave me home alone over night. I studied the handwriting, it was neat and definitely their's. I noticed a drip of wetness on the corner of the paper, but I figured they simply spilled something. The reality then seeped into me that I was alone and had no idea where my parents were. I felt myself becoming more paranoid.

Later on, I was reading a book on the couch when suddenly I was startled by the doorbell.

Setting down my book with a sigh, I walked over and cautiously opened the door, but no one was in sight. I quickly shut the door as my anxiety and fear heightened. The dog’s whimpering got more frequent as well.

The rest of the day went by quietly and slowly without any more happenings. Though, I keep seeing the dog sniffing and scratching at the door to the basement and whimpering quite loudly. It’s gotten me curious, but I never dare to go in there or see what she’s so interested in. I simply forget about it, telling myself the dog probably just senses some kind of small animal down there, or something silly like that.

Though the truth was, I was actually frightened. Those little excuses I told myself was me trying to convince myself that everything was alright.  Her whimpering eventually got too intense to handle, as it was making my head hurt.

So, gathering up the little courage I had, I finally decided to discover what she was so interested in. As I neared the door, a terrible odor came to my senses, one so overwhelming I could barely breathe. Shoving her aside, I cracked open the door and stared down the dark staircase. Taking a deep breath, I then slowly made my way down the creaky steps.

I felt my breathing pattern become shallow yet rough. I noticed that the further I went down, the worse the smell got. I then jumped as I felt my dog leap down from behind me, jumping into the darkness of the room. I finally got to the bottom step, and switched on the light. Seeing the terrifying sight in front of me I gasped and froze with shock and fear.

I had found my parents, but it surely wasn't the way I had wanted. I gazed at their lifeless bodies hanging from the ceiling. Their eyes were cut out of their face. Their once flawless and tan skin was now torn, cut and covered in blood. I willed myself to run, to scream for help, but I was numb. They were gone, and all I could do was stare, almost paralyzed with fear. I was finally able to move my eyes as I got some of my senses back. Peering at the wall, I noticed something on it. As I looked closer, I noticed it was writing.

There on the wall left to my parents, was a sloppy-like sentence written in a red substance, that was most likely the blood of my parents. Reading the words, I knew it was it for me. My whole body then went into a state of shock and fear. I felt my dog nudging my hand, but I was too far gone. All that I was aware of were those words.

“You're next, Nara.”

Then, I was overwhelmed with a sense of dread as my perpetrator got a hold of me, pulling me closer to my torment. Bringing me a step closer to my unexpected fate. I was brought into a state of permanent fear as my senses were fading. I was blacking out, vanishing from reality. The last of what I saw was a blurry yet familiar face coming towards me in a slow manner. Agonizing howls were heard as my vision faded. I felt my body slip to the ground as I went limp. The last of what I felt was a numbing pain in my arm, as if I was being shot with anesthesia.

Then it all went dark, as I was finally gone from reality in a temporary sleep.
